Family Carroll
By Joe Carroll
I have been recently advised that my family ‘the carrolls’ originated in oughterard before moving to glasgow scotland around the mid 1870’s. my great grandmother was Bridget Mc Garvell and she was married to patrick carroll. I would welcome ANY information that can be provided. Relations as far as I am aware, were a family named osborne and they owned a farm. if by any chance you can help it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks joe.

Hi Joe,
I failed to find any Patrick Carroll in the Oughterard area. A Peter Carroll is recorded in official documents as “Oughterard” in 1895. Nothing further.
A Patrick Carroll is recorded with a son John, born 1873 in Fairhill, Clonbur, Union of Oughterard. Mother is recorded as “Julia Hoban”. Most “Carroll’s” appear to be West of Oughterard. An RIC Constable named “Patrick Carroll” was stationed in East Galway.
In regard to “Osborne” only two names are recorded in Griffith’s Valuation for 1855: http://www.askaboutireland.ie - Free
Edmund with a house and garden in Barrack Street, Oughterard;
George with a house and land in Carrowmoreknock, approx. four miles South East of Oughterard on the Western side of Lough Corrib;
Ireland Census for 1901: http://www.nationalarchives.ie - Free Site
No Osborne’s recorded for Barrack Street.
Rushveala, approx. one mile South of the town on the Galway road has two families:
Rebecca, aged 70 years and Thomas who is residing with his wife in the home of Patrick Creagh. He is shown as a “Cousin” of Patrick. Possible connection with Rebecca and Barrack Street?
Regards,
