Oughterard's First Ban Garda (policewoman)

Margaret (Peig) Tierney Brown, daughter of John & Annie Tierney, Bridge Street, Oughterard. Peig was born in 1938. She was one of five children Tessie (Jackson), Bridie (Coyle), Paddy & John Joe.

In July 1959, Peig joined the Garda Siochana, she was one of the first women who joined the force, she and the other eleven successful applicants were chosen from 178 women who had replied to an advert in the media requesting applications from women.

They were assigned to the Dublin Metropolitan Division Pearse Street, while stationed there Peig was promoted to Sergeant.

Peig was the first sergeant posted in Limerick in 1962, along with four fellow Ban Gardaí.

In 1965, Sergeant Peig Tierney married Detective Sergeant Michael Brown. Post marriage, Peig had to leave the force. (Women Gardai were obliged to retire on marriage).

Peig & Michael had 3 sons Liam, Sean & Michael.
Peig passed away in November 2016.
