Christina C. Richie, Oughterard 1872

Antoinette Lydon

A couple of years ago I got a phone call from Power’s Bar and asked if I had a few minutes to speak to an American couple from Oklahoma, that wanted help with tracing a Christina C. Richie, Oughterard 1872.
The couple bought the sampler in the US and they were trying to find some information on Christina.
They came to Oughterard because of this beautiful sampler.
Meg & her husband were sure that Christina lived in Oughterard, Co. Galway, however there is more than one Oughterard in Ireland.
My initial thought was that Christina was from Oughterard in Co. Kildare, So the research began……….

Researching the Richie Family

My first place to check was the National Archives website to see if there was a Richie family living in Oughterard, Co. Kildare.

1901 Census for the Richie/Ronaldson Family

By 1901 Christina has married, had two daughters and was a widow. Christine and her daughter Irene are living with her parents David and Christina Richie. I cannot where her eldest daughter Christina ‘Ina’ on the 1901 Irish Census
Link to the townland of Oughterard, Co Kildare
From the Census, I was then able to search for a marriage record for Christina Richie and a Ronaldson man on Irish Genealogy.ie

Christina Cecilia Ritchie married John Ronaldson 21st January 1891

Marriage record of Christina Richie & John Ronaldson 1891

Christina’s father David Ritchie died 11th Sept 1910
From this record I found a brother Thomas for Christina Richie Ronaldson

1911 Census for the Ronaldson Family

The daughters of Christina Richie & John Ronaldson; Ina (Christina on birth record) & Irene were attending boarding school in Dublin.
Ina (Christina) was born 18 November 1893 and Irene was born 25 July 1895 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
Found a death record for Christina C Ronaldson on 27th Jan 1930 in Dublin, so she never remarried.

Christina’s Daughters

Christina Ronaldson (daughter of John Ronaldson & Christina C Ronaldson) married Archibald Adams a widower on 15th June 1937 in Dublin. Archibald was a Civil Servant, on this record it clearly states that John Ronaldson is dead.
Archibald lived at Church Road, Malahide, Co. Dublin in 1911
His first marriage was to Marian O’Driscoll in 1913, Marian died Dec 1925 aged 39 years.
Archibald Adams died 25th March 1958 NOTE his address 5 Wilton Place, that’s where Christina Sr died in 1930.
Christina ‘Ina’ Ronaldson Adams died 17 Dec 1983 and is buried in Saint Andrew Cemetery, Malahide, County Dublin, Ireland
Irene Jean Ronaldson was born on 25th July 1895 in Manitoba, Canada she married James Arthur Fraser from Carrigart, Co. Donegal on 30th March 1921
James Arthur Fraser died 18th Jan 1964 in Harlockstown, Co. Meath
Sadly, I could not find when Christine C Richie Ronaldson died and where she is buried.
From a beautiful sampler made in 1872 to being bought at an auction in the USA, a family came ‘back to life’ and the family history of Christine will be kept with the sampler.
