Nora (nee McMahon) D'Arcy

John D'Arcy Tiernan

This is a photo of my Maternal Grandmother Nora (nee McMahon) D’Arcy.  She was born in Glasgow, Scotland but was sent to Oughterard to live with relatives Tom and Mary (nee Logan) Osbourne .  They didn’t have any children and she went to help with the farm.

The story has been passed on that a photographer went through the village and took photos of the area.  This photo of my Grandmother was taken in 1907 at a ‘neighbor’s house’ that had a better look.

Nora emigrated to Boston, MA where she married my Grandfather John Joe D’Arcy.

  • John Joe was my grand uncle and I was given his captain’s football medal by my uncle Johnny D’Arcy. The medal was won by the Oughterard Junior team in 1919 after becoming Country Galway Champions . It was the 1st County title victory for Oughterard. John Joe and brother Michael played on that team and later emigrated to Boston where they continued playing Gaelic football there. There is a photograph of both brothers in a New England Gaelic football team of 1924 on the Oughterard Heritage website, Gerry D’Arcy, Magheramore , Oughterard , Co. Galway 3
