I visited Leam school this past April 2022 took pictures of the school . It brought back many fond memories of when I attended classes there in the early 1950s
The students were asked to bring a sod of turf to keep the school warm
I hope someone saves the old school house and make it a museum maybe rename it The Quite Man School

Mrs Prendergast was my grandmother and my dad Joseph seems to have been the only child in 1st class at that time. Maurice the baby of the family in Infants, Ray in 2nd, Eithne in 4th, and Sean and Pauline in 7th class. The filming of the Quiet Man was one of my dad’s favorite yarns. His version grew many legs over the years.
I am the Padraig O Liodain (Paddy Lydon) listed in the third grade (Rand a 3) in 1950. We lived in Derry (Derabeg) during those years. I remember Mr. O’ Dowd (Martin) my first year at Leam School. After Mr. O’ Dowd Mrs. Prendergast was our teacher, she had a large family most of whom attended Leam School at the time.
It is interesting now to recall that two of the children attending were protestant and us Catholic’s were not to socialize or walk to or from school with them. Also, the protestant students were asked to go outside during morning, noon and evening prayers. Very sad indeed.
Also, I remember the huge presence to film the Quiet Man. I remember the school kids being asked to walk over the little bridge (The Quite Man Bridge) and we were filmed doing this, I remember the huge trucks and buses and other equipment there for filming the Quite Man.
