Oughterard Cemetery
Joyce cycled the 15 miles (24km) from Galway to Oughterard on a summer Sunday in 1912. He went to ‘the lonely churchyard on the hill where Michael Furey lay buried’ in his short story ‘The Dead’, written six years earlier but not yet published. He told his brother in a letter that the graveyard was ‘exactly as I imagined it’.
Please note that Michael Furey is actually buried in the new cemetery in Rahoon on the outskirts of Galway city
