Oughterard 5
Michael Anthony’s 4
In an entertaining game played at Corribdale Oughterard on Sunday last, the newly formed Oughterard Hibernians A.F.C. gained their first victory over a Galway Factory team, Michael Anthony Ltd. Despite the fact that an icy breeze prevailed throughout, both teams provided good attacking football which kept a sizeable attendance entertained to the final whistle and on this display Oughterard’s future seems distinctly promising. Both sides did their share of attacking without result until in the tenth minute following stiff Oughterard pressure a shot from right winger Andrew D’Arcy was deflected to the net by a Galway defender to put Oughterard ahead.
This was followed by an all out attack on the Oughterard goal but thanks to fine defensive work by the Oughterard rearguard marshalled by player coach Malcolm Alexander they held out until in the seventeenth minute Galway equalised from a corner.
After twenty five minutes Oughterard went ahead again through left half back Gerard Kinneavy who collected a pass on the edge of the penalty area before turning to crack a fine shot into the right corner of the net.
Then following pressure on the Oughterard goal Galway centre forward scored from close range to equalise after 30 minutes. Just before the interval Oughterard went ahead again through inside left Tom Lydon leaving the half time score Oughterard 3; Michael Anthony’s 2. On the resumption Oughterard’s defence was subjected to severe pressure and Galway equalised in the fourth minute through left winger Tom Nally who cleverly worked through on the left to score from close range.
After fifteen minutes Oughterard again went ahead through outside right tht Robert O’Sullivan who dribbled through on the right before cleverly cutting in to the edge of the box to hit the ball into the roof of the net. Two minutes later Galway took advantage of a slight error in the Oughterard rearguard to equalize. After twenty eight minutes Oughterard scored what what proved pre to be the winning score when following a hop ball inside right Edward O’Sullivan cleverly stroked the ball into the corner of the net.
Taken all round it was a good performance by the Oughterard side which augurs well for the future.
