Anglicized from Irish: An Aird

Translates to: “The height” or “The promontory”

Etymology:

The townland got its name from its high position – 21 metres above sea-level – in comparison to its surrounding area. Ard is a penninsula and the land which connected the area to the mainland was also much lower, often liable to flooding. This meant the location could act as a good vantage point over that section of Lough Corrib as well as the surrounding area thus creating its name.

Siting:

Situated in the northern extremity of Kilcummin parish. Bounded on the north, east and west by Lough Corrib and on the south by Ardnasillagh townland.

Contains 106 acres, all very good arable land with the exception of twenty acres of bog.

Eagle Island No. 2 (rock) – A barren rock situated on Lough Corrib to the east of Eagle Island No. 1. Contains ½ acre.

Eagle Island No. 3 (rock) – A barren rock situated on Lough Corrib to south-west of Eagle Island No. 4 and north of Moor Island No. 4.

Grass Bush I No. 2 (island) – Situated on Lough Corrib and contains ¼ acres all under rough grass and bushes from which it has derived its name. It lies to the east of Grass Bush Island. No. 3.

Illaunnagapple (island) – Translates to Horse Island. Situated on Lough Corrib and contains 4 acres all under rough pature. A triangulation station is situated in the western part of the island and two rocks (one of which is trigonometricallly fixed) lies north of the island.

Moor Island No. 1 (rock) – A barren rock situated on Lough Corrib south of Moor Island No. 2 and north of Glassflag Island.
