A couple of weeks ago, I got a nice short email from Niagara Falls looking for information on his grandfather Thomas Faherty’s family, the writer Damian knew that his grandfather Thomas who died in Kilkeel Co. Down in 1929, had a brother Michael that died in Calgary in 1963 and that he was related to the people in Faherty’s Bar, Oughterard. His request was could I find when they were from and where they were buried.

So my search began…..

I lived next door to Faherty’s Bar for 9 years, and knew a ‘few’ of the cousins.
So I started with the wonderful free website www.irishgenealogy.ie and started on the Civil birth records, then checked the 1911 & 1901 Census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/  the Graveyard database on our own www.oughterardheritage.org was also extremely helpful.

Knowing the names of the late Martin, Edward, Michael John (who emigrated to the US), Richard Faherty & their sisters Mary Faherty, Evelyn Faherty Tuck, Bridie Faherty O’Farrell, I was able to find birth records for those born before 1920, from that I was able to find their parents names Patrick Faherty & Ellen Stanton (on her marriage record she is Helen Staunton) and then their parents marriage record which in turn gave their fathers names and the place they were from. It’s like peeling back layers and layers of history. Each record gives another clue.

So eventually I found that Thomas one of at least 6 children and their parents were Michael Faherty & Ellen Gibbons

Thomas Faherty was born in 1869  He died in 1929 in Kilkeel, Co. Down.

Mary Faherty was born in 1872 in Garryoman, Recess, Galway,Ireland. She married John Joyce on 09 Sep 1919 in Roundstone, Galway, Ireland. He was born in Imlaghroe, Toombeola, Galway, Ireland.

John Faherty was born in 1875

Michael Faherty was born in 1877 died on 19 Jul 1963 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Patrick Faherty was born in 1879 died on 25 Jun 1947 in Oughterard, Galway.
