Basketball Camps 2000

By Mary Kyne

Over the years Corrib Basketball Club has organised summer camps for the players at every level. This was an opportunity to build on the club’s solid foundation of youth involvement. In 2000 the club welcomed back two die hard coaches from Biddeford High School, Maine – Paul Mc Donagh and Bill Harriman. In 2000 they brought with them NCAA college player Dan Darigan.

Paul and Bill had been coming to Corrib from 1995 on wards and from 2001 they returned to coach at the world famous basketball camp at Dungarvan, Co Waterford. as International Coaches along with some famous names from the world of NBA. The camps always attracted a large number of aspiring basketball players.

Corrib B.C. Local N.S. Tournament 2001

St. Annin’s N.S. Killannin won the local schools’ Basketball Tournament held in June. There was a tie for a place in the final between Oughterard and Derryglen with Derryglen school getting through on score difference. Killannnin played Derryglen in the final and won.

About 70 children took part in the event.

All Ireland Senior Cup Champions 2002

The Senior Girl’s team defeated Cahir Community School, Co Tipperary in a thrilling All Ireland Final in the National Basketball Arena, Tallaght on February 12th. St Paul’s girls showed great determination against a much taller team and no doubt they were spurred on by the determination to win the title for Mr. Padraig Kelly who had coached the girls for so many years. This was the second All Ireland title for many of the girls who were part of the All Ireland winning Cadet team 2000.

The team had to play without Ailbhe Boyce who had got the MVP award in the semi-final against Loreto College, St Stephen’s Green, Dublin. Ailbhe was injured in training and had to watch the final from the bench. However Oughterard won a very tough match 57-49.

At half time St Paul’s led 35-30. During the second half Coláiste Dun Iascaigh drew level but Emer Butler and Caoimhe Clancy scored vital three pointers for Oughterard and Sinéad D’Arcy played a great game in attack – although on four personal fouls, she continued to attack and forced the opposition into fouls.

Coláiste Dun Iascaigh had two excellent players, twins Rosie and Shelly Tobin, both six feet tall. They scored 29 points between them for Cahir. Oughterard players, Laura Molloy and Avicen Fahey, with a great height disadvantage, had to work hard to mark and curtail these two good players, but the determination of St. Paul’s team won through in the end.

A big band of supporters travelled from Oughterard and Killannin and they gave strong vocal encouragement to the team. They were delighted to see the Oughterard Captain, Caoimhe Clancy accept the trophy. Caoimhe scored 22 points for the team and was the recipient of the MVP award.

Padraig Kelly trained this team for years until his death the previous November. The team’s performance in Tallaght was a great tribute to his dedication over the years.

A reception was held in the Corrib Hotel where the principal Mary Nihill congratulated the team on their fantastic achievement. She thanked Joe Sheils who coached the team after Padraig Kelly’s death and Brendan Laffey Manager.

Under 11 girls -  coached by Ita Green. They beat Moycullen, Barna, Claregalway, Corandulla, Ballinrobe and losing only to Oranmore.

Under 11 boys – coached by Niall Malone, Matt Tierney and Peter Harte. They were all underage and had a very promising season.

Under 13 girls – coached by Mary Angela Mc Grath and Oral Malone. They won most of their games against Barna, Gort, Claregalway, Moycullen and Maree
