There were scenes of huge excitement in Oughterard on Sunday night as John Morley and his team returned to Corribside with the County Intermediate football title. Before a huge attendance at Moycullen sports field earlier in the day. Oughterard performed with character and style to overcome a gallant Annaghdown side by two points (0-7 to 0-5).
The sides served up a thrilling draw three weeks earlier and the replay was action-packed and full of tension. The Corribsiders were ahead at half time (0-4 to 0-3) but had a player dismissed early in the half.
Their scores from Dermot Boyce (0-3) and Conrad Keogh while Gerry Forde, Mickey Burke and Hugh Mulrooney registered points for Annaghdown. Oughterard had a lot of opportunities in the second half but found scoring difficult. They failed to score for 23 minutes and Annaghdown were in control by a solitary point as the game entered the closing stages.
However, three memorable points from Fergus Gillespie (free) Pat Burke and Dermot Boyce gave Oughterard a great victory.
While this was an outstanding team performance, the wholehearted effort of Harry Walsh, Dermot Boyce, Francis Kyne, Bobby Tierney, Pat Burke. Fergus Gillespie was man of the match on Galway Bay FM, John Canavan will not be easily forgotten.
This is a great boost to football affairs in Oughterard and warm tributes were extended on Sunday evening to the work of Mr. Padraic Firitéar, team manager and his selectors and officials. A video of this enthralling contest will be viewed with interest and enthusiasm over the winter nights,
