1. Kilmacduagh Tower
By David Collins
Monastic site founded by St. Colman, son of Duagh in the 7th century and has the highest Round Tower in Ireland. The tower is unusual in that it leans over half a metre from the vertical, similar to the Tower of Pisa. It consists of the ruins of seven churches and an abbot’s house. Lady Gregory’s ancestor, the Very Rev. Dudley Persse was Dean of Kilmacduagh between 1662 – 1700. Open all year round.
