Emigration in the 1800s

By Jim Fahy

The following from the Galway Vindicator dated April 30th, 1842 shows that 18,317people emigrated from Ireland to Canada in 1841. Comparable figure for England: 5,070,Scotland: 3,559. Emigration to Canada was stopped in 1838 due to insurrection there and resumed in 1840. The plight of the emigrants on the various voyages makes for harrowing reading.
