Historic Success for Oughterard Boxer Lizzie Lydon Murphy

By Sean Clancy

Lizzie Murphy Lydon became the first female boxer to win an All Ireland title for Oughterard Boxing Club on Saturday the 4th of May. A week earlier Lizzie defeated Taylor Brady of Esker BC in the semi- final when her fight went to a count back on a score of 10-10. Lizzie defeated Jessica Bissett of Bracken BC on an impressive score line of 15-5 to win the clubs first ever female title and Lizzies second All Ireland medal having been awarded an All Ireland title the year previously. There were huge scenes of joy as Lizzies hand was raised declaring her winner, as she was well supported in the National Stadium by family, friends and neighbours. Also boxing in the finals this weekend for the Oughterard Club was Amy O’Donovan who boxed very impressively against two time All Ireland Champion from Marble City BC Courtney Doheny, with the score finishing 11-7. Both girls can be very proud of their achievements and the club wishes to thank all those that travelled to Dublin and everyone that came out to greet the girls on their home coming. It  wraps up another successful year for the club with Kieran Molloy winning the Cadets All Irelands and progressing to Russia to box in the Europeans at the end of July.
