Local Doctors

There were people in the area that cured people’s illnesses. There was one man whom local people believed had a cure for every disease and he was known as a ‘Draoi’.  One day a young boy arrived at the Draoi’s house, pretending that he was sick. The Draoi was examining the boy when the King’s principal doctor came by.  The Draoi informed him that there was a sick boy in the house.

“ I can cure that boy,” said the doctor and in he went into the bedroom to examine the young boy. Neither the doctor nor the Draoi could determine what was wrong with the young man. With that the young boy’s father came along and he proclaimed that he had a cure for every disease. “ If you cure this boy,” said the Draoi and the doctor you will be the King’s principal doctor from now on.

With that he took out of his pocket a small bottle with water and berries. He gave it to the boy and the three waited for over an hour observing the boy’s condition. After an hour the boy jumped out of the bed and shouted with delight, “I’m okay now, I am no longer sick.”  The king’s principal doctor took the boy’s father to the king and said, “ Here is your doctor now. He is better than I am. He was able to cure this young man when I wasn’t.”

From then on until his death the boy’s father remained the King’s  “Príomh Dochtúir”.

Bhí fear an uair amháin agus sé an tainm a bhí air ná Paidín Rua.  Oíche Nollaig a bhí ann agus dhún sé an doras amach an oíche sin. Chuala sé torann mór ag an doras agus d’oscail sé é agus ní fhaca sé éinne amuigh. Dhún sé an doras arís. Chuala sé an torann arís.

Chuaigh sé amach agus chonaic sé bean agus páiste ag seasamh taobh amuigh. Labhair sé go garbh leo agus dúirt sé , “Cc’n fáth a bhfuil sibh ag buaileadh an dorais mar sin?”. Cé bheadh ann acht an Mhaighdean Beannaitahe.

Seanfhocail: Deirtear nár ceart an doras a bheith dúnta Oiche Nollaig.
