Christmas Long Ago
Michael O'Connor
Remembering Christmas long ago brings happy thoughts to mind
Of a time when people were humble and poor and also simple and kind
They laboured, prepared for months on end for this special night to shine
As they decorated up their homes for that midnight so divine
The festival, it started on the night of Christmas Eve
With the family all together no one dared to leave
The cake was cut and shared around as supper got underway
As the flame from the Blessed Candle replaced the light of day
With holly and ivy everywhere, adorning the walls around
It framed the pictures on the walls from ceiling to the ground
The homemade Crib was perched on high on the kitchen window small
As the scene was set and the prayers were said for neighbours one and all
That night the scene was magical from Gorthacarnaun Hill
Looking down the valley so peaceful and so still
As the candles twinkled merrily in the cottage windows bright
I’ll ne’er forget that vision on that far off Christmas Night
The true message of Christmas was portrayed before my eyes
In the eerie stillness all around that I witnessed with surprise
It seemed as though the world stood still on that very Special Night
As it waited for Our Saviours birth to gladden and delight
