Remembering Christy

Oughterard Newsletter July 2010

One of Oughterard‘s best known citizens and renowned for being one of the most important supporter in Connemara Rowing, Christy Butler will be sadly missed. Always one of the most prominent faces at the annual local regatta and always an active member of the rowing scene, his absence will be as noticeable as his efforts were impressive.

For the past ten years Christy has been part of the revived Oughterard Regatta committee (1999) and before that was a member of the original regatta (1950’s – early 1990’s). His commitment and experience in the sport came from his time in the boats, rowing and racing for years all around the country in all conditions.

Christy’s lifelong passion for local sports can only be admired. As a rower, an organiser, a mentor and a knowledgeable patron, Christy was a model for a life immersed in the locality, always ambitious, always involved.

The Oughterard Regatta Committee would like to express their deepest condolences to Gretta, Christy’s family and friends, likewise its gratitude for all the work and time Christy selflessly offered through the years.
