These photos depict the railroad employment history of John Henry
Stewart, gatekeeper at Mahera More – Galway-Clifden Railway Line.  He
was employed by the Midland Great Western Railway
North Wall Station, Docklands, Dublin, Ireland, for the monthly salary
of 18 pound sterling at the age of 18 in 1888.  He was promoted to
signal keeper two years later and received an increased in salary of 1
pound.  He was recommended by employment by Sir William Kaye.  He was
transferred to the West due to an unknown railway accident and
received a position on the Galway-Clifden line with a
gatekeeper’s cottage at a salary of 15 pound sterling. He maintained this
position until his death in 1935, around the time of the railroad line
closing.

His position, as noted in the Census of 1901 was Railway Policemen

The ledger shows compensation for Mary Ellen Stewart, wife
who became gatekeeer for one year, and then the home was transferred. The cottage was transferred by Mary Ellen Stewart to oldest son, Henry Stewart on 18/7/40 with a Land Evaluation Reference File Notation.
