John Geoghegan & Catherine Halloran

Looking for any information about John Geoghegan and his wife Catherine Halloran who resided on Main Street in Oughterard. John died in 1890 and Catherine died in 1916. The 1901 & 1911 census’ show that Catherine operated a hotel/guesthouse. They had a daughter Anne who married Martin Burke and their daughter Anne operated the Social Welfare Office on Main Street possibly from the same address as the hotel. John & Catherine also had another daughter Julia who married James Byrne who was a Baker. Any additional information would be most appreciated.

  • Marion,
Thank you for the information. Do you know if Joe Lee is a professor at NY University? I wish to contact him but want to be sure I have the right person.

  • Martin & Anne Burke’s daughter Katie was the mother of the Irish historian Joe Lee! She married Thomas Peter Lee of Carraroe in 1940.

  • Hi Geri,

In relation to your query regarding John Geoghegan:

the House Valuations recorded in October 1853 for the townland of Wormhole in the parish of Killannin show a “John Geoghegan” being in possession of a house, described as a “School” there. There is also the comment “No Land”.

In the same townland there is recorded a “Martin Craven” in possession of a house and office with the comment “No Land”.

There may be a connection here with Bridget Craven who was married to Michael Geoghegan and who resided in the townland of Derrylaura, Oughterard.

    Regards,
